Attack on health workers in Bheri, seven-member investigation committee formed to find out the facts

Relatives have attacked a health worker after a patient of Dang died while undergoing treatment at Bheri Hospital in Nepalgunj. Pramod Dhital, chairman of the Bheri Hospital Development Committee, said that his relatives attacked him after he was admitted to the hospital on May 18.

According to him, Dr. Chandra Prakash Sahu and nurses Asmini Gurung and Sadiksha Gairai were attacked by the relatives of the deceased. Tensions flared after the deceased’s son and two brothers tried to assault the on-duty doctor Sahu and the nurse. He said that the patient died while trying to save him by putting him on a ventilator as his condition was critical. After the death of the patient, the angry relatives attacked the health workers and vandalized the ICU room of the hospital.

Sheila Sharma, a nursing officer at the hospital, said that a health worker escaped from the hospital after she was attacked while on duty. Four nursing staff and a doctor were injured in the incident. A team including Chief District Officer Shivaram Gelal and Superintendent of Police Om Bahadur Rana rushed to the hospital after the incident.

The nurses working in the hospital have demanded security guarantee and action against the abusers. Banke Superintendent of Police Om Bahadur Rana informed that the relatives of the three victims who attacked the doctors and nurses were taken under control by the police last night and kept at the District Police Office.

A seven-member investigation committee has been formed under the coordination of Assistant Chief District Officer Shankar Bista to investigate the incident. Laxmi KC Wali, president of Nepal Nursing Association, Banke, said that there was no working environment due to the series of attacks on health workers at Bheri Hospital and demanded action against the culprits.
