UEFA Europa League: Manchester United defeated by Villarreal

Spanish club Villarreal have beaten English club Manchester United in the final of the UEFA Europa League last night.

Villarreal won 11-10 on penalties in the final in Gudansk, Poland.

After the scheduled 90-minute match ended in a 1-1 draw, the match went into extra time. Even then, the game ended in a penalty shootout.

Earlier, Villarreal striker Gerard Moreno scored in the 29th minute of the first half. Moreno converted Pareho’s beautiful “free kick” into a superb goal, while the “yellow submarine” Villarreal took the lead.

Manchester United equalized in the 55th minute of the second half. United were back in the game through striker Edinson Cavani’s ‘Poacher’s Goal’.

The long-running penalty shootout turned out to be a marathon. All 11 Villarreal players converted their penalties, while Manchester United goalkeeper David Deheya missed. And the game went 11-10 in favor of Villarreal.

Villarreal’s head coach Unai Emery has won the most Europa League titles. He has become the first coach to win the Europa League four times. He broke Giovanni Trapatoni’s 3 Europa League record and made history last night. Emery has previously won the Europa League with Spanish club Sevilla in 2014, 2015 and 2016. This is Villarreal’s first European title in the club’s 98-year history.
